Pineapples and gravity

Oneshot – 763 words
Matsumoto Jun/Inoue Mao

Matsumoto Jun and Inoue Mao have broken up thirteen times.
Eleven out of thirteen were declared by Mao. The last one was five days ago, and they got back together four days and twenty-two hours ago.
Jun laughs heartily, resting his head on the cool side of the bathtub and stretching his legs. Warm water splashes around his thighs and he feels the vibration of his voice echo throughout his body.
“Baka!” Mao throws a wooden spoon at him and shouts from her side of the kitchen counter. Jun paces to his left to barely miss the flying object and hold his hands up in the air.

“Mao-chan…”

“I tell you everything,” her brows furrow even deeper and she points at him menacingly. “Everything, Jun! Do you know how stupid you make me feel?”

“Mao, it was a sudden change, okay? The script changed and I didn’t know until we had to start shooting!”

Jun bites his lip to stop himself from smiling. It isn’t rare to get Mao mad, and he admits that he does it for fun sometimes, but it’s because his girlfriend was just so incredibly cute. He loved her more than anything in the world.

“I hate you,” Mao lowly whispers and storms out of the kitchen. Jun sighs.

Maybe it was that time of the month.

Mao usually doesn’t get this angry (as in, “I hate you” angry) because of an onscreen kiss.

Jun hears their bedroom door smash shut… and then her faint sobs.

After a few minutes, her childish scream reaches his ears, “We’re breaking up, baka!”

He stands up and pulls on the plug, staying still as he watches the water swirl around and around the drain, emptying the white porcelain tub. He steps out and wipes his feet on the rug, tugs on a towel hooked on the wall and wraps it around his waist. He grabs another towel and starts to rub his dark hair.
“…tto zutto wasurenai sora…”
Her singing voice – which is rare for she dislikes to sing around him – reaches him and gets louder and louder. Jun turns to the door just as the knob rotates and the door opens. Mao steps in and lets out a small gasp, and Jun smirks in amusement as he watches her eyes widen, and then dart up and down his body. A deep shade of crimson spread across her cheeks, and he raises an eyebrow. She shuffles her feet out, not taking her eyes off of him for even a millisecond, and closes the door after her.
“Sorry,” he hears her squeak in a few seconds.
“No, you can come in!” Jun raises his voice with a slight teasing tone.
“Baka!”
He lets out a chuckle and gets himself completely dry before getting out and dressing himself in their bedroom. Jun can hear Mao’s slow chopping in the kitchen. He adores how she tries to cook, even though she was just so bad. She doesn’t let him in the kitchen because he knows he’s a better cook.
He wears a white t-shirt and his most comfortable pair of pants before walking over to her. Her eyes were focused on the carrot in front of her, and Jun can tell how hard she was biting her lower lip in concentration.
“Want me to do it?”
She ignores him and continues on. In a few seconds, she releases the knife from her hand and sighs.
“Fine. It’s just chopping anyway.”
They end up ordering pizza for dinner and cuddle on the sofa, feeding each other their crusts and pineapples – Jun doesn’t like crusts and Mao doesn’t like pineapples.
“You know what,” Mao chews on her food as she talks. Jun actually finds it endearing. She takes a pineapple piece from her pizza and pops it in his mouth.
“I kind of miss school. Physics was my favourite subject,” she tells him.
“I didn’t know that. Why?”
“Don’t you think gravity’s interesting? There’s a force out there keeping us down on the ground.”
Jun wants to roll his eyes and comment on how he doesn’t like Physics, but knows he’d be called a baka for it.
So instead, he sits closer to her and catches her eye. She looks right back at him. Jun leans down and captures her lips.
In an instant, Mao feels an object pass by her teeth, and when she accidentally bites into it, she realizes it is a pineapple.
“What’s gravity for when I’m already falling for you?”
He kisses her again and feels her mouth curl upwards into a smile.
